Be a Contemporary Chameleon, not a Professional Dinosaur!

Downsizing...rightsizing...restructuring...reinventing...streamlining...outsourcing...the mere mention of these words cause high blood pressure, heart-burn, insomnia, and tension headaches in offices across the country. Employees must keep pace with the rapid-fire changes American businesses face.

With technology advances and fierce global competition, many once secure business professionals find themselves in the uncomfortable position of being out-maneuvered. In his book, he advises to accept the probability of continual change in job duties, co-workers, bosses, and careers; to expect to do more with less, faster and better. Realize job requirements will often be uncertain and vague; yet, take full responsibility for outcomes. Give more than you take. Fix the problem, not the blame. Adjust expectations.

Speed up is another recurring theme in Pritchett’s series of employee handbooks on change. All this decrease in corporate body count and simultaneous increase in systems improvement and technological upgrades are not random, careless acts. Like the chameleon, these changes are survival instincts. Where employees are slow, organizations can’t go fast.

Keep learning! "We used to think of school as grades K-12... Now we’ve got to start thinking of school as K-80," Pritchett says in "Mind Shift". His research also reports that 50% of our skills become outdated in a matter of three to five years. As a result, the fastest growing learning sector is employee education. In today’s job market, continuing education is a fact of life.
